SDG 11 – SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
INTRODUCTION
Cities and communities must themselves be sustainable. Increasingly, the world’s population lives in urban centers, which are also home to universities. Cities can be hubs of innovation and opportunity, yet they may also concentrate poverty and inequality. The interaction between universities and their communities—both urban and rural—must therefore be positive, inclusive, and sustainable over generations.
Universities act as custodians of cultural heritage, knowledge, and the environment. A sustainable community must have access to its history, culture, and shared spaces in order to thrive. “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași (UAIC) embraces this responsibility through policies, programs, partnerships, and infrastructure that ensure public access to cultural, educational, and natural resources, while promoting sustainable practices in transport, housing, and campus development.
Definition
Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It focuses on:
- access to affordable housing and quality public services
- availability of green and public spaces
- protection of cultural and natural heritage
- reduction of the environmental impact of urbanization
- promotion of safe, accessible, and inclusive environments for all
SDG 11 also emphasizes sustainable infrastructure, low-carbon mobility, and resilient urban planning as essential components of long-term environmental and social well-being.
UAIC as an Urban Sustainability Partner
UAIC’s participation in the Iași NetZero City Coalition, publicly announced in July 2025, reflects its strong commitment to supporting the city’s transition toward a sustainable and climate-neutral urban future.
The coalition brings together:
- public authorities
- universities
- private sector actors
- civil society organizations
in a shared effort to transform Iași into a resilient, low-carbon, and environmentally responsible city by 2035.
As a key academic stakeholder, UAIC contributes through:
- interdisciplinary expertise in environmental sciences and urban sustainability
- research and data supporting local climate and development strategies
- participation in policy co-creation and evidence-based decision-making
- educational initiatives and civic engagement activities
Through this involvement, UAIC strengthens its role as both:
- a scientific partner in urban sustainability governance
- a civic actor supporting community awareness and participation
The university’s alignment with the Iași 2035 initiative ensures coherence between institutional actions and broader urban development strategies, reinforcing its contribution to sustainable city transformation.
Sustainable Campus and Community Infrastructure
UAIC contributes to SDG 11 through continuous investment in infrastructure that improves living conditions, accessibility, and sustainability within the campus, which functions as an integral part of the urban environment.
A key example is the project:
“Modernisation of University Infrastructure to Ensure an Equitable Academic Environment within UAIC”
(22 July 2024 – 31 August 2026)
This project integrates both social and environmental dimensions of sustainability and includes:
- rehabilitation of nine student accommodation buildings
- modernization of the “Titu Maiorescu” canteen
- upgrading of recreation and reading spaces
- rehabilitation of bathroom facilities across multiple buildings
- improvement of thermal comfort and building performance
- installation of fire safety systems
- modernization of water and heating distribution systems
- rehabilitation of pedestrian alleys in the Codrescu Campus
- installation of smart infrastructure and modern facilities
These measures contribute to:
- improved safety and accessibility
- enhanced quality of life for students
- increased inclusiveness, particularly for vulnerable groups
- development of a more sustainable and resilient campus environment
The project demonstrates UAIC’s understanding of sustainability as a combination of:
- environmental responsibility
- social equity
- long-term institutional and urban resilience
Cultural Heritage, Public Access, and Community Engagement
UAIC plays a significant role in preserving and promoting cultural and natural heritage, ensuring that university resources remain accessible to the wider community.
Key contributions include:
- public access to museums, botanical gardens, observatories, and historic buildings
- organization of cultural events, exhibitions, and artistic performances
- support for choirs, artistic initiatives, and digital heritage projects
- promotion of lifelong learning and community engagement
These initiatives strengthen the connection between the university and the community, contributing to a more inclusive and culturally vibrant urban environment.
Sustainable Practices and Urban Integration
UAIC promotes sustainable practices that contribute to the development of a more livable and environmentally responsible urban space, including:
- support for low-carbon mobility and pedestrian-friendly campuses
- provision of affordable student housing
- integration of sustainable building standards
- promotion of environmentally responsible behavior within the academic community
These actions reduce the environmental impact of campus operations while enhancing the sustainability of the surrounding urban ecosystem.
