12. Responsible Consumption And Production

SDG 12 – RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Responsible Consumption and Production

Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) seeks to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns by reducing waste generation, improving resource efficiency, promoting sustainable management of natural resources, and supporting environmentally responsible economic practices. It encourages institutions, companies, and individuals to adopt circular economy principles, implement sustainability standards, and foster environmentally friendly behaviors.

Key Aims of SDG 12
  • Efficient use of natural resources and circularity in production processes.
  • Reduction of waste generation, with strong emphasis on recycling, reuse, and minimization.
  • Environmentally responsible practices in procurement, chemicals use, and materials management.
  • Sustainability education and consumer awareness.
  • Monitoring environmental impacts throughout product and service life cycles.

UAIC’s Role

Through its faculties (Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Geology, Economics and Business

Administration, Physics, Law, and others) and its advanced research centers (CERNESIM, RECENT AIR, various ecological research stations), UAIC significantly contributes to sustainable production and consumption through research, education, innovation, and responsible institutional policies.

UNIVERSITY POLICIES AND STRATEGIES SUPPORTING SDG 12

UAIC integrates sustainability into its main institutional strategies, supporting SDG 12 through responsible resource management, environmental protection, and campus-wide sustainability actions.

Strategic Documents Supporting SDG 12
  • Gender Equality Plan 20222025
Promotes inclusion within sustainability-focused programs, green innovation, and responsible research that integrates SDG principles.

University-wide Environmental Commitments

  • Responsible waste management across laboratories, dormitories, canteens, offices, and research stations.
  • Adoption of green procurement principles (energy-efficient equipment, sustainable office supplies, environmentally friendly chemicals).
  • Reduction of plastic use and paper consumption through digitalization.
  • Environmental risk prevention and safe chemical handling in laboratory activities.
  • Energy and water efficiency programs integrated into campus infrastructure upgrades.
  • Support for interdisciplinary research groups focusing on resource efficiency, pollution reduction, and circular economy.

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL ACTIONS SUPPORTING SDG 12 IMPLEMENTATION

Research, Monitoring, and Innovation Supporting SDG 12

UAIC conducts research aligned with responsible consumption and production, through faculties and specialized centers such as the CERNESIM Research Center, RECENT AIR infrastructure, and the ecological and geographical research stations.

CERNESIM Research Center

CERNESIM supports SDG 12 through:

  • environmental quality monitoring,
  • pollution remediation technologies,
  • atmospheric chemistry and aerosol research,
  • identification and quantification of pollutants for sustainable industrial practices,  evaluation of ecological technologies for minimizing emissions.

Its advanced infrastructure allows UAIC to contribute to national and EU-wide environmental monitoring efforts.

RECENT AIR Project

RECENT AIR expands UAIC’s research capacity for:

  • environmental factor monitoring,
  • analysis of pollution sources,
  • assessing the effects of climate change on consumption patterns and resource use.

The project contributes to sustainable resource management and informs public policy.

Partnerships and Collaborations Supporting SDG 12

UAIC participates in partnerships promoting responsible production, circular economy, and sustainable resource management:

  • EC2U Alliance initiatives in sustainability education and green campus development.
  • Collaborations with environmental NGOs, local governments, and national agencies for waste reduction programs and resource efficiency projects.
  • Joint programs with agricultural, industrial, and economic stakeholders to support sustainable production chains.

Events and Outreach Activities Supporting SDG 12

UAIC organizes educational and civic activities to promote sustainable consumption and production:

  • Green campus and recycling campaigns
Awareness programs for reducing plastic, paper, and food waste.
  • Public lectures and seminars on sustainability, circular economy, eco-design, and environmental management.
  • Student activities such as environmental volunteer programs, eco-fairs, and citizen science initiatives.
  • University-wide environmental days, promoting responsible behavior.

Projects Related to SDG 12

UAIC contributes to projects that strengthen sustainable production:

  • Projects on soil quality, pollution reduction, and sustainable agricultural technologies.
  • Development of innovative, sustainable aquaculture feeds that reduce environmental impact and optimize resource use.
  • Cross-border eco-innovation initiatives, including environmentally friendly biomass use.
  • Centers of Excellence focusing on water resources, aquaculture, and environmental sustainability, promoting resource-efficient technologies.
