The Durham Declaration on Climate Change and Sustainability
UAIC’s engagement with the Durham Declaration on Climate Change and Sustainability reflects its alignment with a broader European academic movement aimed at positioning universities as key drivers of climate action and sustainable development. Adopted within the framework of the Coimbra Group, the Declaration brings together 39 leading European universities around a shared vision of embedding sustainability across all dimensions of academic life, including education, research, governance, and societal engagement. It articulates a set of guiding principles designed to strengthen inter-university collaboration, enhance sustainability-oriented research and teaching, and contribute to global climate efforts. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, as a member of this network, participates in this collective commitment by integrating sustainability into its institutional strategies and by contributing to knowledge exchange, policy dialogue, and collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing climate change. In this context, the Durham Declaration serves not only as a strategic framework but also as a catalyst for coordinated action, reinforcing the role of universities as active agents in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future.
The European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U) Alliance
UAIC’s participation in the European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U) Alliance reflects its strategic commitment to advancing sustainability, innovation, and international collaboration within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). As part of this alliance of nine European universities and numerous associated partners, UAIC contributes to the development of a new model of university cooperation that integrates education, research, and civic engagement within a human-centered and sustainable framework. EC2U aims to foster quality education, joint research, social innovation, and sustainable mobility, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while promoting seamless mobility and intercultural exchange across participating institutions and cities. Within this collaborative ecosystem, UAIC plays an active role in co-creating interdisciplinary programs, supporting challenge-based research, and strengthening the connection between academia, local communities, and policy actors. Through its involvement in EC2U initiatives, such as joint degrees, virtual institutes, and civic engagement platforms, UAIC reinforces its position as a key contributor to the development of a sustainable, inclusive, and interconnected European academic landscape.
National
The National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Romania 2030
UAIC’s alignment with the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Romania 2030 reflects its commitment to supporting national priorities aimed at achieving balanced and long-term development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Adopted by the Romanian Government in 2018, the Strategy provides the overarching framework for implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda at national level, setting clear targets and coordinated actions to address key societal challenges and reduce development gaps in relation to the European Union. Centered on the citizen and future generations, the Strategy promotes an integrated approach to public policies, emphasizing resilience, social equity, environmental protection, and sustainable economic growth. Within this framework, UAIC contributes through education, research, and community engagement initiatives that align with national sustainability objectives, supporting evidence-based policy development, fostering innovation, and strengthening institutional capacity to respond to contemporary societal and environmental challenges.

Iași NetZero City Coalition
UAIC’s participation in the Iași 2035 coalition reflects its commitment to supporting the city’s transition toward a sustainable, climate-neutral urban future through interdisciplinary expertise, research, and civic engagement. As a key academic stakeholder within this collaborative platform, the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași contributes to the co-creation of long-term development strategies aligned with the objectives of climate neutrality, innovation, and improved quality of life. The coalition brings together public authorities, universities, private sector actors, and civil society in a shared effort to transform Iași into a resilient and environmentally responsible city by 2035. Within this framework, UAIC plays an active role in generating knowledge, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and fostering education and community involvement in sustainability-related initiatives, thus reinforcing its role as both a scientific partner and a civic actor in the local green transition.
